After covering recent fireball and dinosaur news, we get reoriented with the Finger Lakes (New York) region’s topography and erosion features, while relating the views of early natural philosopher James Hall – who recognized geomorphology that must have resulted from regional floods, and more recent geologists Wright and Shaw – who proposed that some landforms were from catastrophic subglacial discharges. Excitable RC browses around on the National Map viewer and Google terrain maps, showing the varied forms covering a broad area around Lake Ontario, and surmising a scenario that would create the traumatized landscapes. He then reads and explains thoroughly the results of seismic reflection profiles, reported on by Hinchey and Mullins in 1989, that identified layers of infill at the bottoms of the deeply eroded gorges, and how those six sequences would have been deposited. Extraordinary descriptions that set the scene really help to start visualizing the phenomenal processes at work that were rearranging North America’s, and specifically central New York’s, landforms during the Late Pleistocene – 13-14 thousand years ago.
