Episode #058: Intense Pluvial Events in the Southern Appalachians
Welcome to a new year! RC goes through a series of papers, starting in 1960, outlining the progression of thinking about the cause of massive and numerous blockfields and sediment fans throughout the southern Appalachian Mountains, from the gradualist perspective of “periglacial” effects to a more catastrophic view of extraordinary, intense, and prolonged rainstorm events. From the James River in Virginia to North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain and Flat Laurel Gap, the deposits throughout the region reveal evidence created by rare pluvial outbursts, leaving the geologists struggling to conceive their severity and conditions of discharge. Uniformity has value as a baseline, but problems arise when trying to make all changes fit that model, so with the recognition that none of these features are being built today – only being eroded by modern processes, the gradualist bubble is showing some breaches in its edifice. Episode #055: Clues to Reconstruct Megaflood Events
RC wants to show people that this evidence is everywhere around them, as we converge once again on Central New York State and the Finger Lakes / Lake Ontario region to explore the many glacio-fluvial features, many possibly the result of another proposed impact that created the Rochester Basin. With extensive use of the USGS National Map browser, RC ventures west into central Michigan’s Saginaw Lobe and Grand Valley flood channel, then further west to the many features related to the formation and catastrophic outflow of glacial Lake Wisconsin. We consider the accumulation of ice and glacier flow/spread, the differences between living and dead ice, flood and megaflood events of scaling magnitude, and the amazing opportunity that we have to study – with our modern tools of observation – a multi-million-year event that transpired very recently in Earth’s geological history.

Episode #054: Traumatic Subglacial Erosion of Finger Lakes Region
After covering recent fireball and dinosaur news, we get reoriented with the Finger Lakes (New York) region’s topography and erosion features, while relating the views of early natural philosopher James Hall – who recognized geomorphology that must have resulted from regional floods, and more recent geologists Wright and Shaw – who proposed that some landforms were from catastrophic subglacial discharges. Excitable RC browses around on the National Map viewer and Google terrain maps, showing the varied forms covering a broad area around Lake Ontario, and surmising a scenario that would create the traumatized landscapes. He then reads and explains thoroughly the results of seismic reflection profiles, reported on by Hinchey and Mullins in 1989, that identified layers of infill at the bottoms of the deeply eroded gorges, and how those six sequences would have been deposited. Extraordinary descriptions that set the scene really help to start visualizing the phenomenal processes at work that were rearranging North America’s, and specifically central New York’s, landforms during the Late Pleistocene – 13-14 thousand years ago.

Episode #053: Ontario Impact – Finger Lakes and Drumlins
Brad expresses his gratefulness for rock ‘n roll, leading to stories of first concerts and festival devolution, and another review by RC of his experience of scale invariance over the Minnesota River within the Ice Age River Warren channel. We then get back into the formation of drumlins and the problem of scale, while revealing massive swarms in and around Lake Ontario, which includes a deep basin that seems an emanation point for the radial Finger Lakes of central New York State. Amazing scenes abound in the many glens and gorges that feed into those long, narrow lakes, showing sudden catastrophic erosion. Finally, RC jumps back to the radial drumlin fields formed beneath the Michigan lobe, southwest of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and asks persistent questions regarding the timing and sequence of all these phenomenal flood features’ formations.

Much was learned from the detonations of nuclear weapons during the 1950’s, with numerous craters blasted out in the Yucca Flats of Nevada. The estimates for a similar event every 1600 years are pondered, and we figure that those periods are considered to be even shorter now. Then we revisit a few other spots from our “Southwest Experience” in October, including a stop to see the distinct Black Mat at Murray Springs, petroglyphs at Chevelon Canyon, and Monument Valley – where the “Great Denudation” begs for questions about the erosional processes that shaped those landscapes, and the history of seismicity that should’ve toppled the fragile sandstone spires long ago. Unless of course, that those erosional processed occurred much more recently than previously imagined…

Episode #050: Wisconsin Glacial Megafloods
RC and crew talk a bit about sites that they’ll be visiting on their “Southwest Experience” tour out of Sedona, which leads to some reminiscing about prior trips and a retreat that RC attended in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains above the San Luis Valley. Getting back to the “same sediment”, we are reminded of the link between the micro/macro evidence that can assist with the identification of potential impact sites into the ice sheets. Following the path of waterflows on various maps from the Lake Nipigon basin down thru Lake Superior and the massive spillway channels of Minnesota and Wisconsin, we consider the creation of the mass of meltwater-derived features while attempting to grasp the scale of the events that ultimately encompassed the entire planet during the terminal Ice Age catastrophes.
