Looking to continue the discussion on drumlins, RC and crew again attempt to grok the widespread shifts that would have filled the many proglacial lakes and released the catastrophic drainings across the landscapes. What was the chronology of these interrelated events, and could the time-scale be compressed from what has been figured for decades? Episode #048: Meltwater Musings and Lake Agassiz
We look back at last week’s lesson on drumlins from guest Jerome Lesemann, marveling as it seems he did, at the “absolutely astounding” scale of the water-flushed features created at the bed of a continental ice sheet. Many questions remain about the source of the meltwater and the details of massive Glacial Lake Agassiz. Its release thru Big Stone Lake on the Minnesota River has left many clues that we can learn to recognize as features indicating megafloods in other locations. Relict flood channels with “misfit” rivers are difficult to explain with gradualist principles, so attempts by Dury that had to include a paleo-river that was much larger than the modern flow were early indications of a flaw in the Uniformitarian model. Then RC considers Washington’s Palouse Hills as analogous to some of Jerome’s crescentic forms, and finally, shares photos of an impressive site in the Okanogan Valley.

Episode #047: Drumlins – Flow-form Forensics
Jerome Lesemann, from Vancouver Island University, is a drumlin expert, and student and colleague of pioneer of the Meltwater Hypothesis for the formation of drumlins – John Shaw. After some introductory reminiscing, we let Jerome have the floor and educate us about the enigmatic geomorphological features known as drumlins. Their presence far and wide across North America, beneath the former continental ice sheets is put into perspective. Though supported by hydraulic modeling and analogy across seven orders of magnitude, the widespread and various forms’ genesis is still contentious and controversial, hundreds of years after the phenomenon was first observed! The fields of drumlins are SO vast, that the quantities of water necessary to create them all is “absolutely astounding” and the major hurdle to acceptance of the hypothesis. Perhaps the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis will offer a boost to its explanatory potential…

Episode #046: Potholes and Mid-continent Megafloods
While reviewing the events around the catastrophic drainings of Glacial Lake Agassiz, the ongoing question arises: What was the impulse of energy that initiated the domino procession of megafloods? We continue to marvel at the oversized mid-continent spillways in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin – investigating multiple sites with the “advanced viewer” on the USGS National Map website, with particular focus on the underfit rivers, the massive potholes along the St. Croix (that we explored with Graham Hancock in 2014), and the discharges thru Lakes Nipigon and Superior. RC then broadens the connotations of “lake” to include more temporary impoundments of meltwater, which leads to a critical assessment of the current model of Lake Missoula and its Ice Dam. RC wonders why there has been no coherent theory that connects all the known megaflood events with the rapid deglaciation from 14.6 – 11.6ka. Lake Agassiz was like an inland sea of fresh water, dwarfing the modern “Great Lakes” that drained off thru multiple routes back to the oceans, in many places with known catastrophic erosion. Massive mid-continent spillways contain the meandering underfit modern rivers, but were once channels for outrageous volumes of meltwater. We question the formation of glacial Lake Missoula and the force that pushed the first domino and initiated the sequence of catastrophes, as we continue to build our vocabulary and grammar that is allowing us to read the language of the landscapes – known as geomorphology. Identical features are on Mars and in stream-beds, illustrating the scale-invariant nature of water doing its work of erosion and deposition. In a final rant during this distributary episode, Randall supports Graham Hancock and bashes those that ask for credentials.

Episode #044: Megafloods – Missoula, Lake Agassiz and Mars
As we get deeper into the geomorphic evidence for megafloods, RC provides some historical reference for the evolution of the so-called “Missoula Floods” that were identified in the 1920’s by Harlen Bretz, who traversed the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington. He called them the Spokane Floods and speculated that the floods came from accelerated melting of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, but later tentatively accepted the uniformitarian explanation that an ice dam repeatedly formed and released a giant impounded lake from western Montana. We then continue to assess phenomenal Lake Agassiz and its many outflow spillways to the south thru southern Manitoba, the Dakotas and Minnesota, funneling into the channel at Big Stone Lake, and compare some of the identical megaflood features that have been imaged on planet Mars.

Episode #042: Volcanic Eruptions ‘Upend’ YD Impacts Evidence?
RC reviews evidence for nanodiamonds in the Oklahoma Panhandle, with a hint at a more recent and local impact event, and in the eastern margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Can nanodiamonds be produced terrestrially? A chart of the Volcanic Explosivity Index leads RC to talk about ash from Mount St. Helens that has been found and dated within the Scablands floods’ rhythmites, and how those were the basis for the theories of repeated Lake Missoula dam-break outburst floods. Then we get into the just-released paper that links the micro-proxies to volcanic eruptions and credits coincident endogenic processes for the Younger Dryas cooling episode, and because the authors do nothing to negate or refute the evidence for a YDB impact, they have a long way to go to prove their case and extrapolate the evidence from Hall’s Cave to the entire planet.

Episode #040: Megaflood Appalachian Boulder Fields/Streams
We talk more about the curious character Jeremy, and his role in the past few decades of knowing RC – geologic explorations and his first Carolina Bay overflight, debating Sasquatch and designing drawing compasses – until his recent disappearance into the Pacific Northwest.
Multiple adventures into the Appalachians revealed scoured valleys, filled with cobbles and boulders that tell a specific and catastrophic story that most are blind to their signatures and presence. With examples of giant boulder deposits, RC instructs about imbrication and then more into scale-invariant features like sand bars and current ripples, culminating with a few examples of what we’ll see during the fall Scablands tours.
